Education is the ability to listen to almost anything without losing your temper or your self-confidence. ~Robert Frost
My Philosophy on EducationI am studying Secondary English Education (7-12). In order for education to be effective in an English class for grades 7-12 I believe that students should have the opportunity to choose their own books. I understand that some districts mandate that certain literature be taught, but for the bulk of the year I think kids should read what they want to. The reason for this is that I wouldn't expect kids to read something they don’t like. They’ll feel much more accomplished if they can say they read a few books in a year than if they can say they “read” a few classics. They will also learn more that way because they’ll be interested and engaged in the text. I do not believe there is a right or wrong thing to read. As far as writing goes I think students should be introduced to many genres and styles. I feel as though being a better reader can make one a better writer. I also believe that a classroom should be set up so the desks are in a circle. The teacher should coordinate the discussion and provide input and information but the majority of the talking should be done by the students.
